Venus Retrograde in Scorpio: Your Values Are Under Review
What are you still tolerating that no longer reflects your worth?
Venus stationed retrograde on 3rd October at 8º29’ Scorpio and remains retrograde until 13th November at 22º Libra. When Venus turns retrograde, love, money, relationships and personal values enter a period of review. This is not about going backwards for the sake of it. It is about looking beneath the surface to understand what has been driving your choices. Scorpio does not do superficial, and this transit is unlikely to let us get away with pretending that everything is fine when it isn’t. The invitation is clear: take off the mask, question your assumptions and get honest about what you truly value.
Throughout October, our attention is drawn towards a question that can be uncomfortable but profoundly liberating: What is happening beneath the surface of my life? The same thoughts may keep circling, old conversations may return to mind, and familiar emotional patterns may become impossible to ignore. This is the territory of Scorpio, where desire, trust, intimacy, power and vulnerability meet. We are being asked to look beyond what people say and examine what their actions reveal. More importantly, we must be willing to look at ourselves without excuses. Awareness is the beginning of change, but only if we are prepared to act on what we discover.
The excavation begins: Desire, anger and power
On 5th October, Mars in Leo opposes Pluto in Aquarius, creating a powerful fixed-sign confrontation. Mars represents our drive, desire and instinct to act, while Pluto exposes the deeper forces operating beneath conscious awareness. With Venus in Scorpio, a sign traditionally ruled by Mars and modernly associated with Pluto, the symbolism becomes particularly potent. Venus squares both planets, bringing questions of value, desire and relationships into direct contact with questions of power and control. Where have you compromised yourself to keep the peace? Where have you mistaken attachment for love, loyalty for obligation, or endurance for strength?
Think of Venus as an archaeologist entering the basement of your psyche. She is not there to decorate the room or make the contents look appealing. She is there to uncover what has been buried, neglected or deliberately kept out of sight. Sometimes the excavation reveals treasure: a forgotten desire, a genuine connection, a talent or a part of yourself you abandoned to fit into someone else’s expectations. At other times, it uncovers the emotional equivalent of a body in the basement: resentment, betrayal, outdated loyalties or truths you would rather not confront. Either way, the purpose is not to create drama. It is to discover what is real and decide what deserves a place in your future.
On 11th October, Venus squares Mars, bringing desire into conflict with frustration, anger or resentment. What you want and what you have been accepting may no longer sit comfortably together. Then, on 20th October, Venus squares Pluto, intensifying questions around control, emotional dependency, manipulation and unequal exchanges. These aspects can symbolise pressure points in relationships, financial arrangements and our relationship with our own desires. Notice where you feel compelled to chase, persuade, prove or control. The deeper question is not simply who has power over you, but where you have handed your power away.
So why would Venus want to dig up the dirt? Surely the planet associated with love, beauty, pleasure and harmony would prefer to keep things pleasant. But Venus is not just about what we love; she also describes what we value, what we attract, what we choose and what we believe we deserve. Scorpio strips away the pretty packaging to reveal the substance underneath. A relationship may look good on paper but feel emotionally impoverished. A financial arrangement may appear successful but cost you your freedom. A life that once fitted may now feel too small. Venus in Scorpio asks us to stop confusing what we possess with what is genuinely valuable.
The eight-year cycle: Why the past may be returning
Venus has an intriguing relationship with time. Approximately every eight years, Venus returns to a similar part of the zodiac, creating an opportunity to revisit themes associated with previous cycles. Think back to October–November 2018, 2010, 2002 and so on… What was happening in your relationships, finances, self-esteem or personal life during those periods? What were you learning about trust, desire, commitment and the cost of compromise? You may recognise familiar themes returning, although they will not necessarily unfold in exactly the same way.
In astrology, the Scorpio area of your birth chart offers another layer of context. The house containing Scorpio can help identify the life area in which these questions of value, intimacy, control and transformation may become especially relevant. Consider what began, ended, intensified or remained unresolved during previous cycles. Perhaps you made a choice based on fear rather than desire, stayed in a situation beyond its natural ending, or discovered a truth that changed how you saw yourself. The point is not to relive the past. It is to recognise the pattern, understand what it taught you and decide whether it still belongs in your life. Sometimes history repeats itself because we have not yet changed our response.
The Libra New Moon: Reset your relationship standards
The Libra New Moon on 11th October at 2.50 am, 17º21’ Libra, turns our attention towards relationships, balance and the agreements we make with others. Libra is concerned with reciprocity: the space between two people, the exchange of energy, and the delicate balance between personal needs and mutual consideration. Under this New Moon, we may see familiar dynamics through a different lens. What once seemed acceptable may no longer feel fair. What once appeared to be a compromise may now look like self-abandonment. This is an opportunity to reassess the standards by which we choose, maintain and invest in our relationships.
Libra, ruled by Venus, has a remarkable capacity to read a room. It notices tone, timing, expression, atmosphere and the subtle shifts that occur between people. It recognises that communication is not limited to the words being spoken; what is avoided, withheld or expressed through behaviour matters too. At its best, Libra is a relational strategist, capable of considering another perspective without immediately abandoning its own. It can negotiate, soften confrontation and find common ground. But its shadow appears when the desire for harmony becomes more important than the truth. Keeping everyone happy is not the same as creating a healthy relationship, and being agreeable is not the same as being authentic.
With Venus retrograde, this New Moon is not simply about setting fresh intentions or making a list of what you want from other people. It asks you to examine your own participation in the dynamics you experience. Do you speak honestly about what you need, or hope that someone will work it out? Do you maintain a connection because it nourishes you, or because you are afraid of what it means to let go? Do you make room for another person’s perspective while expecting them to make room for yours? The work is to establish a more conscious relationship with yourself, so that your relationships with others can be built on choice rather than fear, obligation or the need for approval.
This is where the unapologetic self begins to emerge. Not through aggression, emotional detachment or the refusal to compromise, but through the ability to remain connected to yourself while engaging with another person. You can be considerate without becoming compliant. You can love someone without making them responsible for your worth. You can listen without agreeing, and you can walk away without needing to prove that the other person was wrong. Your standards are not a demand that everyone meet your expectations; they are a declaration of what you are willing to participate in.
Jupiter’s optimism meets the reality check
The Libra New Moon receives inspiration from Jupiter at 21º Leo, adding a desire for expansion, confidence and forward movement. Jupiter in Leo encourages us to think bigger, take up space and imagine what might be possible when we stop making ourselves smaller. Yet enthusiasm does not always mean that every part of us is ready to move. With Saturn, Neptune, Uranus and Pluto all retrograde, the wider astrological picture also emphasises reflection, reassessment and internal change. There may be a noticeable tension between the urge to move forward and the recognition that something still needs to be understood, resolved or released.
This is not a contradiction. Growth does not always happen at the speed of our ambition. Sometimes the most productive thing we can do is pause long enough to recognise which direction is actually ours. Before charging ahead, ask whether your next move is being driven by genuine desire or by frustration with where you currently stand. Are you building towards something meaningful, or simply trying to escape something uncomfortable? The difference matters. Jupiter may encourage you to dream bigger, but Venus retrograde asks whether the life you are pursuing reflects your actual values. Ambition without self-knowledge can take you a long way in the wrong direction.
Mercury retrograde: Review the decisions before you make them
The question now becomes: what will you choose to do with what you have discovered? As Venus continues her review, we may find ourselves reconsidering decisions, conversations and agreements when Mercury retrograde begins on 25th October at 20º53’. Mercury retrograde is traditionally associated with reviewing information, revisiting conversations, correcting misunderstandings and reconsidering plans. In the context of this Venus cycle, it adds another layer of reflection. What have you said yes to without really meaning it? What have you assumed without asking? Which decisions deserve another look now that you are beginning to understand your own motives more clearly?
There is a difference between being stuck in the past and returning to something with greater awareness. One keeps you trapped in an old story; the other allows you to change your relationship with it. You may not be able to rewrite what happened, but you can reconsider what it means to you and how you respond from here. Before making a major decision, examine the information available, identify what remains uncertain and give yourself room to think. This is not an invitation to postpone every difficult choice indefinitely. It is an invitation to avoid confusing urgency with clarity. Sometimes a decision becomes easier when you stop demanding an immediate answer.
This is the real work of Venus retrograde: learning to trust yourself enough to sit with uncertainty without rushing to fill the silence. You don’t need to have every answer today, but you do need to be willing to hear what your inner authority has been trying to tell you. Let the old stories surface, question the beliefs that have shaped your choices, and notice where your values no longer align with the life you are living. You are not here to keep repeating a version of yourself that has outgrown its purpose. You are here to recognise what is true, reclaim what is yours, and make choices that reflect the person you are becoming. Before you move forward, get honest about what you are moving forward for.
